About Terry 

Terry O’Day grew up in a union household, and early, on decided to dedicate his life to more just, inclusive and sustainable world. He was first elected to the Santa Monica City Council in 2010 on a platform of renters’ rights, more affordable housing, smart growth and workers’ rights.  

 

As Mayor Pro Tempore during these challenging times, Terry has been effective and proactive – protecting residents from the impacts of COVID-19, and working with the community to confront the fallout from May 31st and to begin the conversation to reimagine public safety.  

 

An internationally recognized environmental leader and green business entrepreneur, Terry has a BA from Stanford in Public Policy and an MBA from UCLA. He has been the Council’s leading voice for sustainability. Terry’s priorities have been and will continue to be to ensure our City is just, diverse and sustainable. His record includes: 

 

  • Preserving and creating affordable housing with the goal to meet the Santa Monica’s RHNA numbers

  • Protecting the City’s partnership with Santa Monica schools – funding playgrounds and classrooms 

  • Protecting senior housing programs and services 

  • Converting Big Blue Bus to zero emission / zero carbon 

  • Making our water supply resilient with local sources 

  • Opening streets to pedestrians and bikes, including protected bike lanes on Broadway, safe routes to schools, and parking lane dining on Main Street 

  • Investing in programs that help people stay in their homes, like our Protecting Our Diversity fund and other affordability programs 

 

Terry his two daughters are residents of the Pico Neighborhood where he has lived for 22 years.
